Getting Started

These are commonly asked questions regarding car preparation and other requirements for competing in Historic Rally Association events. Further details are available from other club documents, the HRA eligibility committee, or friendly long time members.

Please contact one of your committee members if you are having trouble finding the answer to a specific problem.

HRA Vehicle Eligibility

HRA has two main eligibility categories:

  • H68: Pre-1/1/1968 cars
  • H81: Pre-1/1/1981 cars

Modifications are allowed based on the HRA eligibility rules. A separate group exists for pre-1/1/81 PRC cars.

Vehicle eligibility and compliance with Motorsport Australia’s safety requirements (as outlined in Schedule R) must be verified before events.

For clarification, check with the HRA Eligibility Committee.

HRA Standard Car Class

The HRA Standard Car Class is for vehicles that remain as close to their original condition as possible, with minimal modifications.

This series offers an entry-level option for competitors who prefer a simpler and more cost-effective approach to historic rallying. The series encourages participation by focusing on reliability and driving skill rather than heavy modifications. Check the event’s supplementary regulations for eligibility and specific rules.

Motorsport Australia Licenses

To compete, you must be a financial member of a Motorsport Australia-affiliated club (HRA included). Most events require a Motorsport Australia National Rally Licence,  available by filling out a form on their website and paying the applicable fee.

The licence you need depends on the event you're competing in - check the event Supplementary Regulations.

Club Permit Scheme

HRA participates in the VicRoads Club Permit Scheme (Red Plates), offering a cost-effective alternative to full vehicle registration for cars older than 25 years used in club events.

Events

The HRA normally run three main types of events throughout the year with varying requirements. The three basic types of events which HRA members compete in are described below:

These challenging events require on-sight navigation and are open to eligible HRA vehicles with a Motorsport Australia logbook. Competitors need a Motorsport Australia Speed Licence (or higher). Scrutineering for safety and roadworthiness is required before the event. Entry fees are around $175 per car.

Open to all vehicle types, Touring Assemblies involve no speed or special tests. Run on Sundays over 4-5 hours, they cost about $50 per car. At least one crew member must hold a Level 2 licence.

These multi-day events combine navigation stages with special tests like hill climbs and motorkhanas. Open to most vehicles, entry fees range from $300 to $1,200 depending on the event’s length and inclusions. Basic safety equipment and a Level 2 licence are required.

Navigators are vital to HRA events. The club offers Navigation Schools and other training opportunities. Many experienced members are available to help new participants.

HRA relies on volunteers for event organisation. There are roles for everyone, from manning road closures to assisting in event direction. Volunteers are always welcome.
