IMODS Rally

Welcome to the IMODS Rally an event In Memory Of Dave Smith. This event takes place in the areas in the Central Goldfields that Dave Smith used for of his excellent Nightstalker Rallies. Luckily for Dave, he could run the events as fully navigational, without having to use fully closed roads.

What we have done is selected several forest areas to run as Regularity Stages, without the need for roll cages etc, so, like in Dave’s events, you can run what ya brung.

The remainder of the event will run as timed Touring Road sections.

You can choose to just do the Touring, for which you do not need an MA license. There will still be plenty of fantastic roads to enjoy, including some that are not available as Closed Road sections.

The event has approx. 50km of Regularity Stages and approx. 200km of Touring Sections. Basic navigational skills will enable you complete the Touring Sections, which are designed to be road car friendly.

About Dave, from my point of view.

I really can’t remember when I first met Dave, but it was either out in a forest somewhere, or at Tayell Automotive on a Saturday morning, where a group of car rally people used to gather. Dave was one of those people that was always there at events, as a navigator, which he was really good at, or later on as part of the organizing crew.

As a navigator, especially in Trials & navigational events, Dave was a hard man to beat & I had many a great tussle with him over the years. Dave had a variety of drivers through the years, but his efforts with John Rawson in particular & Rick Hartmann stand out.

As a director, Dave was very particular & accurate with his organization & set some excellent events that always had the right balance of navigational difficulty & driver enjoyment.

As a competitor, organizer & all-round nice bloke, the rally community is richer for what he did & poorer as he has left us.
