A Weekend of Learning and Motorsport Safety: My Experience at the First Aid and Rally Safe Training Sessions
4th March 2025
By Jessica Pigot
Motorsport has always been a thrilling yet demanding world, where preparation and safety are just as important as speed and skill. On February 22nd, 2025, I had the opportunity to attend the First Aid and Rally Safe Training Sessions hosted by the Historic Rally Association in partnership with Motorsport Australia. Held at the Manningham Hotel and Club in Bulleen, this event was an incredible chance to gain hands-on knowledge in two crucial aspects of motorsport safety.
A Well-Structured Day of Training
Two sessions were on offer (one per day), making it convenient for attendees to choose the most suitable date. Each day had a morning session focused on First Aid training, while the afternoon session explored the Rally Safe system. With each session expertly conducted by qualified professionals, it was evident that everyone involved was passionate about improving safety standards in motorsport.
First Aid Training: Essential Skills for Motorsport Emergencies
Kicking off at 9:30 AM, the First Aid training was an eye-opener. Led by the experienced Martin Warneke and Owen Polanski, the session covered essential techniques for assessing and responding to emergency situations. From how and when to extract someone from a vehicle to handling fractures and trauma in high-pressure environments, the training emphasized the importance of staying calm and acting swiftly. In motorsport, where accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, these skills are absolutely vital. As someone who has been around motorsport events for a while, I found this training to be a crucial refresher and a confidence booster in case I ever need to step in and help.
Rally Safe Training: A Game Changer in Rally Safety
After a short lunch break, the second session of the day began at 1:30 PM. This session introduced us to the Rally Safe system. We learned how to install the system in vehicles, navigate the tablet interface, and utilize its real-time tracking features. The training provided insights into how this technology ensures better communication between competitors and race officials, ultimately improving safety on the course. Having been out of the stage official game for a while, it was fascinating to see how digital advancements are shaping the future of motorsport safety.
Takeaways from the Event
Beyond the technical training, this event was an opportunity to engage with like-minded motorsport enthusiasts, from competitors to officials. The knowledge gained from both sessions reinforced just how important safety measures are in rally events. Whether it was learning how to administer first aid or understanding the Rally Safe technology, every aspect of the training was invaluable.
For just $25 per person, the value of these sessions was undeniable. A big thanks to Motorsport Australia for their funding support, which helped keep the cost low for participants. The fact that the Historic Rally Association took the initiative to organize such an event speaks volumes about the club’s commitment to the safety and education of the motorsport community.
If you ever get the chance to participate in similar training, I highly recommend it. Whether you're a seasoned competitor, an official, or simply a motorsport enthusiast, having these skills can make all the
difference when it matters most.
A Heartfelt Thank You
